I'm thinking about an assignment in which student teams might design & fabricate environmental musical instruments (for new course "Music, Nature, Sound, and Space") using 3D printing or laser-cutting.

Asking students to provide a budget ahead of time supports them in thinking through a project by creating a practical constraint

Choice in big projects is key. Students love choice. How to provide choice but also steer students away from projects that are likely to fail in an overly frustrating (rather than constructive) way.
