How can studying the past help us in the present?
-
History, both good and bad, repeats itself endlessly. Surely, this is to some degree due to the unchanging elements of human nature, but it is compounded by perpetual forgetting. Knowledge builds on knowledge just as ignorance is furthered by ignorance.About 11 years ago

The expression goes, "History often repeats itself." If this is true the process of studying the past gives us an opportunity to correct any "mistakes" previously committed.About 11 years ago

When ever a there is a pressing current issue, we find a historical predecessor almost every time. By understanding the patterns and tropes that form surrounding the issue, we have much greater knowledge about the context and arguments surrounding it.About 11 years ago

You can understand the context of the problem by studying its roots in the past. Likewise, you could identify previous moments in history where a similar problem has occurred and apply a similar solution.About 11 years ago

Studying the past can help with understanding why and how people have developed their schemas about social life. With these schemas, people divide themselves into groups within society. Whether these groups and then subdivisions within these groups are based upon race, sex, or political position is beside the point. History helps us understand how these groups came to form and if these groups will continue to exist or even change their schemas in the future.About 11 years ago

History repeats itself, and so, by drawing comparisons between current and past events, we can better anticipate and better make decisions about our current state of affairs.About 11 years ago

The past provides context for the situation of the present. The past can also provide examples of achievements we'd like to emulate or mistakes we should avoid making again. History can help us better predict how present actions could affect the future.About 11 years ago

We can understand the factors that have led to the present-day situations; we can avoid situations that occurred in the past by learning from the mistakes; and we can learn more about the human person.About 11 years ago

The past often had similar issues we encounter today, so we can study how those situations were resolved in the past to make more informed decisions in the present.About 11 years ago

The point of history is to analyze events critically in order to both (ideally) avoid making the same mistakes, but also, in a way, be able to predict what will happen based on reoccurring trends. Being able to guess what will happen in the future gives current policy makers and citizens a kind of jumping off point off of which they can begin to solve problems.About 11 years ago

Viewing current events in a context of the events in the past that have led up to them can allow us to get a greater understanding of what is going on and how we can remedy it. We can also learn through the mistakes of the past and attempt not to repeat them.About 11 years ago

When we come across some issues and need to solve them, we can learn from the past and how people have dealt with their issues and apply that information for our problem solving.About 11 years ago
-
We can use the past to see how problems came about and were solved, or made worse, and we can use this to help us respond to or anticipate events in the present.About 11 years ago

Helps with identifying repeating patterns of behavior that aren't context dependent. Easy examples could include: factors that cause revolution, circumstances around political/religious change, etc. They're not 100% predictive though, because of the context--they can't simply be copy-pasted into the appropriate (presumably) modern period.About 11 years ago

Studying the past can help us in the present by learning from mistakes made in the past. By learning how people dealt with certain conflicts and situations in the past we can change the ways that we deal with similar situations or conflicts in the present day.About 11 years ago

Can learn from past and not make "same mistakes." In other words, can perhaps appropriately respond to present by taking the past into account.About 11 years ago

We can look how problems in the past similar to current problems were solved, and, if the methods for solving these problems are still viable today, use them.About 11 years ago

A lot of mistakes and successes have been made in the past, and we can use the results of different choices in the past to make better choices in the present.About 11 years ago

Because the past tends to repeat itself if we don't make an effort to change, so studying the past can tell us what mistakes we made and how to rectify them.About 11 years ago

Because history repeats itself, the things around us change but human nature never will.About 11 years ago
